At Appleseeds, we offer full and part day Kindergarten
following the standards set forth by the State of New Hampshire.
Our classroom is set up into learning centers. Each
day the learning objectives are posted in the classroom and are presented
to the children either in the learning centers or at a table as the
day's project. Journals are written in each day and the children are
given a letter of the week that they practice in their journals. Reading
is such a pleasure for Kindergartners! Our last few years of classes
have particularly enjoyed the Magic Tree House chapter book series.
We even change up the dramatic play area to coincide
with the book that the class is reading. By introducing books such
as the Magic Tree House not only are the children thrilled and excited
about the stories but they are also being introduced to many different
cultures as well.
Math is incorporated in many of our centers. We read
books with counting, or patterns. We play math games such as UNO and
dominos. We have pattern blocks and Unifix cubes that work with patterning
and counting. The children love to play with blocks and studies have
shown that children that are given good block experience through third
grade do best in math. We plan our curriculum with awareness of the
principles taught in the Everyday Math program used in most 1st grades
today.
In addition to literacy and math activities we are aware
of the importance of developing your child's self-confidence, self-control,
and the ability to make friends. Children with strong social and emotional
skills are more likely to be successful in school and life than children
who do not have these skills. We work on these skills during our center
and circle time.
